If you want to understand RockYard, don't start with the app. Start with the yard it is named after.
In the 1980s, Rockcliff Syomen Christie started Little Rock with a hotel in New Amsterdam. He was an engineer by training and a builder by temperament — the kind of man who, when something didn't exist in Berbice, took that as an instruction to build it. After the hotel came a television station. And then he went after the thing he wanted most: a radio licence.
The first application went in in the early nineties. He applied again in 1997. Then he waited. Governments changed, paperwork aged, and other men might have moved on to easier ambitions. He waited more than twenty years.
On 29 March 2014, 88.5 Rock FM went to air — the first radio station Berbice ever had. Not a relay of Georgetown. Not a repeater. A station of its own, in a county that had been told for decades to listen to somebody else's signal. He had six years of it.
The yard part of the name
The same man who fought for that licence spent his evenings in the yard, teaching his daughter to play dominoes and famously keeping back the double blank all game, every game. She cooked for him. Neighbours passed through. Nobody knocked, because in Guyana you don't knock to come in a yard — that is the whole point of a yard.
When we sat down to build a platform for Guyanese creators, every name we tried that sounded like a tech company felt wrong. The thing we were actually describing already existed. It was that yard: an open gate, everybody welcome, everybody with something to say, and the best seat given to whoever is telling the story. So we put the two inheritances together — the Rock from 88.5 and the man it comes from, and the yard where the life actually happened.
What RockYard actually is
RockYard is a place to put up your story — reels, live streams, long video, pictures — with your own page that looks like you and not like everybody else. It is built by Little Rock, the Berbice media house behind 88.5 Rock FM, LRTVS Channel 10 and Little Rock Studio, which means it is the rare platform where the ceiling isn't more views. The ceiling is a real broadcast slot, because the people who run the platform also run a radio station and a television channel.
It is also built for a specific audience most platforms treat as an afterthought: Guyanese people, wherever the work took them. Roughly as many Guyanese live outside the country as in it. They are in Queens and Brooklyn and Toronto and London, and what they are homesick for is not a performance. It is somebody cooking. A domino slamming on a table. A voice from a particular yard they can see when they close their eyes.
Why we tell you this
Because a platform's values come from somewhere. Ours come from a man who believed Berbice deserved its own signal and was willing to wait twenty years to prove it. That is why the gate is open and free. That is why you don't need ID, an invitation or an approval queue to start. That is why creators earn from the first view instead of after some follower threshold invented to keep the money upstairs.
